Warranty Expried

Why does everything seem to break just months after the warranty expires. Our dishwasher has been making terrible noises for the last few weeks, and it was so quiet when we purchased it exactly 14 months ago. I pulled it out and took it apart to find that a seal near the motor leaked and it rusted out the bearings. Now I have to contemplate fixing the dishwasher or replacing it.

A new motor will cost $140 and a new dishwasher about $350. I didn't buy the top of the line dishwasher, ours cost $327 when we got it last year but even at that price it should last more than one year and two months. My parents had the same toaster in their house for as long as I can remember and there are still things that they use that they had before I was born. Things are made so cheaply now that they barely last a few years. We will not leave a good estate sale when we die because there will be nothing left worth selling.

I've decided to fix the dishwasher instead of buying a new one and I have a plan for next year. I took the broken motor to a local repair shop where I was told that the motor is usually a throw-a-way but if I want to take it apart he will find bearings that fit. I have a friend with a machine shop and I'll borrow some time from him to make a new shaft. With that I can rebuild this motor for about $40. Then, when the new motor goes out in about 14 months, I'll have this one ready to go in and I can start the process all over again.

It may sound like a lot of trouble but I'd Rather do that than wash dishes by hand!
