Daylight Savings Time

I think it's about time to abandon Daylight Savings Time. When it was proposed back in 1907 it may have made sense to have extra hours of daylight in the summer for leisure activities and possible energy savings. Especially when you had to tap your own whales to get oil for your lamps. but energy saved in the evening is energy spent in the morning so some of that is offset.

In the 24 hour society that we live, DST seems pretty archaic. With lights on in a large amount of businesses all the time, the savings from changing the clocks is greatly reduced. Last year when they moved the time change by one week, it cost a lot of software developers money by having to create updates for countless phones, computers, GPS devices and other equipment. I have some items that still automatically change to DST in the wrong week.

It seems like a good idea to have an extra hour of sleep in the fall but to many of us who don't have a specific time to wake up on a Sunday, the extra hour means nothing other than being awake at 6 am instead of 7. I went to bed a nine o'clock last night just because the day seemed like it would never end. I'd rather get used to the light of the day changing gradually instead of hitting the speed bump of time twice per year.
