I decided yesterday that I would be taking my driveway back from Mother Nature. Though we did our best to keep up with the snow, the cold weather, wind and my busted hand got the best of us. The kids did a good job of cleaning off the drive but they just don't have the picky meticulous nature that I do in keeping it clean and I wasn't much help. So the result was an inch of packed snow and slush covering most of the driveway.
I could have waited for it to melt sometime in March, or when we get another one of those 40 degree warm-ups but the tracking of wet footprints and sand (thank you City of McHenry) all over my kitchen was driving me nuts. I grabbed my ice breaker and started busting up the snow pack.
It all went fairly smoothly, I'd break up about 10 feet of snow, then shovel it off to the side. I tried the snow blower but that made more of a mess than it was worth. After I finished the first section my wrist was getting a bit sore and I'm pretty sure it was a bad idea but I was determined, I pressed on. In all it took two full hours but my driveway is completely clear and at the end my wrist was killing me. It was time for a vicodin and a sit on the couch. That made it a lot better.
As I look out on my driveway this morning, I feel good (and quite sore) knowing that I accomplished something. And as the sun climbs up into the sky for it's all too brief appearance it should melt the remaining snow that was stuck to the driveway and victory shall be mine. I won't say that I beat Mother Nature for fear of bringing down her full wrath upon my home but at least I can say that I took a little bit back from her grasp. And now maybe my kitchen floor will stay clean for more than a day.
