Greatest Invention Ever

It's been a while since I put anything up here, mostly because of the fractured wrist I suffered last month but also because of Christmas vacation. We drove down to Florida and back over the last week and I realized that cruise control is perhaps the greatest invention ever. It's unfortunate that so many expressway drivers don't know how to use it.

Here I am cruising happily at 70 mph (the posted speed limit) and I approach a slower vehicle in front of me. With nobody around me I push the "plus" button on my cruise control twice, swing around the other car and push the "minus" button twice. This allows me to pass smoothly without slowing down any traffic that might fill in behind me and return to me previous rate of speed.

The problem I ran into most while travelling was when approaching that slower vehicle, there would be cars coming up on my left.As I saw them coming, I would adjust my cruise control to time my pass with the car approaching from behind but at the moment when I should be able to start my pass, they slow down. Then I have to hit my brakes to avoid hitting the car in front of me and we all slow down to 60 mph. If the person coming up behind me had been using cruise control, this never would have happened and we all would be rolling along nicely. Instead, I have to navigate the new mess created by this moron and bring my van and 30 feet of camper back up to speed.

The other problem that plagued me was the slower vehicle that, as I passed them, began to speed up. They would speed up to the point where I had to get back in line behind them only to have the same thing happen a few miles up the road. For whatever reason, (probably stupidity)they didn't want me to pass them, so then I have to run it up to 80 mph just to put them behind me and I never see them again.

Some of the best driving I had was on the way home at 2:00 in the morning with very few cars on the road and almost all of them following the proper cruise control procedures. People please, become friends with the cruise control. It makes travelling the expressways a more tolerable experience and makes it the Greatest Invention Ever!
