Spring ahead!

The federal government has again mandated that we switch to Daylight Savings Time and again I wish they would just get rid of it. There are so many stories out there about how this started that I don't know which one to believe.

Is it because the army wanted to get a jump start on the Germans or so the farmers have more time to farm? Maybe it's the energy savings. Either way I think it's more trouble than its worth.
The Department of Energy just released a study showing that we save .02% of the nation's energy usage by switching to DST. I don't know how much that equates to in dollars, I'm sure it's a lot and it might even cover the cost of the study.

We could probably save that much money in the national workforce by not having to reset clocks in every home and business twice a year. The farmers really don't care since they usually work from sun up to sundown anyway. It just changes the time on the clock, the cows still need to be milked at the same time whether the sun is shining or not. And unless you have an alarm clock set on Sunday morning you won't lose an extra hour of sleep, you just wake up an hour later by the clock.

When they changed the date that we switch to DST there had to be a lot of programs rewritten for electronic devices that change automatically, I still have a few that don't change at the right time. Was the cost for that offset by the .02% energy savings? If we got rid of DST there would not need to be extra programming done since all of the electronic items I have give you an option of turning off DST. Just check the box and be done with it.

We now live in a 24 hour society so I think the energy savings gained by switching to DST is probably not worth all the time and money spent on reminding everybody to do it twice a year. Since we are cutting back on everything else to save a buck, how about we let this one go too. Then I can stop confusing everybody by telling them to spring ahead in the fall and fall back in the spring.
