I have had the Direcway satellite internet for nearly 10 years and up until now it has served me well. It started back in the old house where there was no other high speed internet available. Back then it was a dial-up link for uploading and satellite downloading and it was quite fast for what it was. It beat the plain dial-up speeds by a mile.
I used DSL at my office and that was awesome, I wish I could get that now but when we moved to the new house, I had to stick with the satellite. Again there was no other option. About a year ago cable moved into the area but I still had the satellite, by now it was upgraded to full upload and download through the air and it was much faster. Lately the speeds have gotten slower (even though I pay for the fast speed) and the lag time between the satellite and Earth have gotten longer. And since they only let me download 350 MB per day before cutting my speeds down, I can't take advantage of all that the internet has to offer like software upgrades and On-Demand TV so I decided to switch to cable.
After writing a strongly worded letter to my satellite provider to get me out of my contract, which I had to follow up with a phone call since they didn't let me know if I was free or not, I called Comcast. I went through the car salesman like pitches until I could make the salesman understand that I only wanted internet service, we set up an install date for today.
While I was waiting for the installer I decided to label the wires for my home network so it would be easy to check things when the new service was installed. After labeling the wires I couldn't connect to the internet, all I did was label wires! I could find some of my other computers but not the world wide web. After uninstalling and reinstalling things and multiple reboots I finally figured out that I had a bad wire between my hub and router. I rewired that section and three hours later I was back up and running.
I wanted to get this fixed before the installer arrived and right after everything was back up, I received a call reminding me of my appointment for tomorrow. It is possible that I screwed up but I know it was today because I had to call them back to schedule around a doctors appointment that I went to this morning. This is the reason I didn't want to call Comcast in the first place, I just don't like them. So after all that, my excitement over new high speed access was crushed, I guess I'll have to wait until tomorrow to see how much better it is, that is if they show up this time.
